T
he Peaky Blinders are
back and Tommy Shelby
will be swapping the
backstreets of Birmingham for
the corridors of power after
being elected to Parliament!
As a fifth series of the
BAFTA-winning gangster show
opens with two episodes this
week, the Shelby family have
just lost a fortune in the Wall
Street Crash of October 1929.
But while plenty of people
simply bemoan their bad luck,
Tommy believes the economic
collapse could present some
fresh opportunities and is
determined to make the most
of his new position as the
MP for Birmingham South.
‘Tommy is a complicated
man,’ says Cillian Murphy, who
plays him. ‘Before he went
away to war he had strong
communist views, but since
he returned he’s been on a
path of extreme capitalism
and violence. He’s struggling
with that a lot this year. Can
a bad man do a good thing?’
High places
The new MP soon makes
friends in Westminster and
Sunday night’s first episode
begins with a hail of bullets,
as Finn Shelby (Harry Kirton)
and Peaky Blinders ally
Aberama Gold (Aidan Gillen)
carry out a political hit!
It turns out Tommy has been
paid to deal with a pimp who’s
blackmailing a prominent
lord, but Aunt Polly (Helen
McCrory) is furious when she
learns the truth.
‘Tommy
can’t help
weighing
people
up when
he meets
them,’
explains
Cillian. ‘He
is always
thinking of what he can
gain from each situation.’
Another politician who’s
noticed Tommy is fellow MP
Oswald Mosley (Hollywood
star Sam Claflin), who thinks
the racketeer could become
an important associate. Yet
can he be trusted?
‘Tommy causes quite a
stir when he enters
Parliament,’ says
Cillian. ‘He says
things that upset
the establishment
and wears his
flat cap into the
chamber, which
raises a few
eyebrows!’ ■
