Bake Off

is back!

We grill judges

Paul Hollywood and

Prue Leith about

the new series...

Q

Have you noticed a
change in the Bake Off
contestants this year?

A

Paul A lot of young
people are picking
up baking now, which is
reflected in the tent. They
were all very keen to learn,
especially the younger
ones – they get better
every week as they pick up
little nuggets to improve.
Prue There’s a trend going
on to do companionable,
nice, old-fashioned things.
Think of the number of
clubs there are now for
things like embroidery
and potting –
it’s all back
in fashion.

Q

Is it true there are new
themed weeks this series?

A

Paul There’s 1920s
week and a dairy week

  • celebrating the cow, after
    last year’s vegan week! And
    there’s a festivals episode,
    which lets us incorporate a
    global theme. The bakers
    are choosing festivals not
just from the UK but from
    anywhere in the world.
    Prue It can be festivals
    we’ve never heard of, as
long as they make a bun
    that goes with it.

Q

Have there been many
quirky ingredients seen
in the tent this series?

A

Paul Loads this year!
And a lot of them
are very nice.

Prue Some bakers do stuff
that’s slightly unnecessary
but really lovely, like making
their own butter, or bringing
honey from their own bees.

Q

Have you two had any
arguments about judging?

A

Paul Well, I don’t like
cloves, saffron, or
anything that tastes like
you’re in the dentists.
Prue I love saffron, cloves,
rosewater and all those
things! So we have a little
argy-bargy sometimes. But
we never disagree on who’s
won a challenge. The marks
are nearly always the same.

Q

Any inside info that might
surprise Bake Off fans?

A

Prue The most frequent
questions I get are
about Paul: are his eyes
really blue and is the sun
tan fake? So I can tell you
his eyes are perfectly real,
as is his tan. I spend a lot
of time defending them! Q
