Make changes
for a filmic look
The image is coming together, but
I want to get a ‘old-school’ reportage feel, with
the look of fast film. In the FX tab, I start with
the Grain menu. After zooming in to 100%,
I apply settings of 54, 30 and 50 for the
Amount, Size and Roughness sliders. This
gives the right kind of break-up in the picture.
To create a traditional-looking border, I use
the Post Crop Vignetting settings underneath.
I first move Amount to -100, then set Midpoint
to zero and Roundness to -100. To shape the
border, I then take Feather to 0, and slowly
ramp it up until the edge has a nice degree
of a softness to it. Here, I settle on a value
of 32. The border helps to contain the
image and give it a finished look.

Convert to mono
and push tones
Under Treatment at the very
top of the panel, I select Black & White,
then compress Highlights to -100 and
push Shadows to +100. This brings out
lots of detail – almost like an HDR pic –
but leaves the image looking a bit flat,
grey and underexposed. To compensate
for this, I push Exposure to +0.75,
and Contrast to +70. The Histogram
indicates that there is plenty of black,
so I leave Blacks at 0, but Whites
needs a boost to +18.
I want a really gritty look, so I push
Texture and Clarity to +100 to bring
out definition. It still isn’t contrasty
enough for my liking, so I increase
Dehaze to +25 to get more ‘bite’.
These aggressive changes work well,
and I check the Black & White Mix tab
to see if any adjustments could further
enhance the styling. I push Aquas to
+25, Blues to +20 and Purples to +40
to fine-tune the tones.
