road trip through Aysén,
a little-visited region
of Chilean Patagonia,
home to monumental
glaciers and turquoise
lakes. “I was drawn by
its wild emptiness and
frontier feel,” he says.

  1. Stefan Ruiz
    WILD UPON WILD

“Two weeks wasn’t
long enough,” reveals the
New York City–based
photographer about his
trip to Chile, during which
he ticked off bucket-list
sights like the hanging
glacier of Queulat
National Park. On
previous trips, he’d
visited the capital city,
Santiago, and the
Atacama Desert—but in
Aysén, he discovered
the thrill of escaping the
crowds. “It’s so beautiful
and unspoiled,” he says.

  1. Jancee Dunn
    WHERE HEDONISM MEETS
    HEALTH (P. 30)

“I took my first
international flight at
age 21,” says the frequent
contributor to T+L. “Since
then, I’ve been making
up for lost time.” Her
latest adventure for
the magazine was to the
Hawaiian island of Lanai,
home to Four Seasons’
first wellness-focused
property. Among the
highlights of her stay
was a lomilomi massage:
“The treatment began
with a hug with my
therapist, Maka, and
ended with a soak in an
outdoor tub,” she says.

THAT ISLAND SPIRIT
(P. 82)

“In Puerto Rico, everyone’s
helping out,” notes the
Colombian novelist, who
visited the island last
summer. “I even met a
lawyer who was leading
the restoration of a
historic ruin.” When Rojas
Contreras wasn’t talking
to locals about Hurricane
Maria recovery efforts,
she immersed herself in
the island’s more carefree
side—which included
hitting the dance floor and
eating local specialties like
bacalaítos (cod fritters).

  1. Armando Rafael
    LASTING IMPRESSIONS
    (P. 56)

For this issue, the
photographer documented
Art Deco buildings in
Porto, Portugal, where
he’s been traveling since
childhood. “Lisbon may
get all the hype,” says
Rafael, who lives in
New York City, “but Porto
has grit and character.”
Some of his favorite
spots include Oficina,
a restaurant set within a
former mechanic’s garage,
and BOP, a café and bar
with a collection of more
than 2,000 records.

  1. Marcia DeSanctis
    THE LONG VIEW (P. 90)

The contributor to BBC
Travel and Departures
first visited Rwanda on
assignment for an NGO in

  1. She couldn’t believe
    how much the country
    had changed when she
    returned last fall. “It was
    a whole new and improved
    place,” she says. In Akagera
    National Park, she watched
    in awe as her guide
    pointed out elephants and
    lions. “I had to remind
    myself that the whole park
    had literally risen from
    the ashes,” she recalls.

  2. Simon Willis
    WILD UPON WILD (P. 72)

The British writer has
crisscrossed Europe on
assignment for Travel +
Leisure—most recently
reporting from the port
city of Dundee, Scotland.
For this issue, he took a
