The Great Outdoors
HOLD THEM TIGHT
Use a few basting
pins or binder clips
to anchor your quilts to heavy
furniture pieces or permanent
home fi xtures so they don’t blow
away or fall to the ground.
PROTECT YOUR QUILTS
Outdoor surfaces can
be dirtier than they
look. Place old bedsheets on your
display surfaces before you drape
your quilts. The sheets will provide
barriers against mold, dirt, and
wood stains.
LOOK UP
Both tree pollen and
birds can create a
mess on an outdoor display. If your
quilts will be under a tree or a roof
overhang, you may want to rethink
their placement.
CHECK THE WEATHER
If there’s even a small
chance of rain, save the
quilt display for another day. If your
quilts will be in direct sunlight,
rotate them frequently as sunlight
can fade fabrics and weaken
threads.
Now that the temperatures are getting warmer, I’d love
to display my quilts outside. How do I do that safely?

PREPARE FOR
THE WORST
Never put a quilt
outside that can’t be washed or,
if stolen, would cause you to
regret your decision. Heirloom
quilts or special projects are
best displayed inside.
