TECHNIQUES
Easy edits that are impossible in Lightroom
1
Activate the Layers panel In
Photoshop CC head over to the Layers
panel by going to Window>Layers. Layers
enable you to build up a series of images in
a single document, and the Layers panel will
show you all of the different layers in your
current document. You can turn each layer
on or off by clicking the eye icon.
2
Create duplicate layers Hit Ctrl/
Cmd+J, or go to Layer>Duplicate Layer
to make a copy of your active layer. This is
essential when making involved edits, as
it means you have a copy of the original
should your edit go wrong. Comparing your
edit to the original is useful for checking
your progress as you go.
3
Make selections Tools like the
Rectangular Marquee and Polygonal
Lasso are brilliant for making selections of
parts of your images. The marching ants
will show you selected areas. You can then
choose to copy or cut them out and paste
them onto other images, to build them up
and create composites.
4
Use the Pen tool Photoshop’s
coveted Pen tool can’t be found in
Lightroom. It makes it easy to draw a ‘path’
around even the most intricate details of
your image. Paths have numerous uses,
but for photographers it’s best for creating
highly accurate and detailed selections.
5
Advanced cloning Lightroom’s Spot
Removal tool is rudimentary compared
to the host of clone and retouching tools in
Photoshop. There’s the Clone Stamp tool,
Spot Healing Brush tool and Patch tool, to
name just a few, and as you’re not working
on a large RAW, they’re quicker to use.
6
Remove distractions easily To
use the Clone Stamp tool grab it from
the Toolbox to make it active. Now hold
down the Alt key and click on a part of your
image to source the ‘good’ pixels, then brush
over the offending distraction to paint that
sourced area over it and remove it from shot.
