Along the way, tiny settlements began to appear in the most unlikely places: on

headlands, in valleys, clinging to the sides of precipitous mountains. It brought to mind

unanswerable questions. Who inhabits these places, and how did they get here?

Motoring through a pass in the Faroe Islands, where cur-
rents can rip up to 8 knots, we passed one of the many little
villages that seem to crop up out of nowhere.
