LYNN CANAL

This long and beautiful
inlet and its arms reach about
85 miles N~~ from the junction
of Chatham and Icy Straits. It
is deep and varies in width from
3 to 6 miles. Lined on both
sides by glaciers and peaks,
this can be a very scenic trip.

Haines

This town of 1,700 people
has a spectacular backdrop
composed of the Cathedral Peaks.
It lies on the west side of
Chilkoot Inlet in Portage Bay.
The small boat harbor is pro-
tected by a rock breakwater.
Entry should be made via the
southern entrance. The Harbor-
master controls berths in the
harbor. The ferry terminaI is
at Lutak Iniet a few miles out
of town. The Haines Highway is
the only year-round road which
joins the Alaska Highway.

The Chilkat Dancers give
evening performances at Fort
William H. Seward. Local Indian
arts and crafts are readiIy
available in the shops. Showers,
a laundromat, and restaurants
are available in the town, while
fuel and \'"ater may be obtained
in the harbor.

Skagwav

Skagway lies near the end of
Taiya Inlet off Chilkoot Inlet.
The population of 1,800 is
greatly reduced from the infam-
ous city of 30,000 in the days
of Soapy Smith. However, it
stilI relies on its gold rush
history for its interest and
attractions. A highway gives
access in summer to the Alaska
Highway. With the closing of
the mines the White Pass and
Yukon Railway is not operating.
