PART
MARINE ELECTRONICS
INSTALLATION AND
TROUBLESHOOTING
T
he foremost standards group in North America that deals with marine
electronics installations is the National Marine Electronics Association
(NMEA), which developed its standards, in part, as a response to the
cries for help coming from its members—electronics equipment vendors.
Why the distress? Many of the performance issues related to electronics equip-
ment aboard boats were the result of shoddy or incorrect installation practices.
My contribution to the dialogue is Part 2 of this book. Here’s a brief
overview:
- Chapter 13—general issues related to equipment installation.
- Chapter 14—installation and troubleshooting of communications systems
(VHF, SSB, and satellite), position-finding systems (GPS), and radar. - Chapter 15—installation and troubleshooting of supplementary
equipment, such as depth sounders, wind instruments, and autopilots. - Chapter 16—coaxial cables and antennas.
- Chapter 17—onboard networks.
