With the above advance preparation, should an Urgency situation arise,
whether the vessel is in trouble (Pan Pan/39) or a medical emergency (32/

38) has arisen, you will only have to select the correct address and, if

appropriate, change the programmed LES before sending an Urgency message.

Safety (Securite) communications

When using Distress/Mayday, or Urgency/Pan Pan, you are asking
for assistance - either for yourself or for someone else. DSC Safety
Calls and the voice signal 'Securite' are used to warn other vessels about
a potential hazard, usually:

  • A severe weather warning; or

  • A hazard to navigation.
    (not to ask for assistance).
DSC 'All Stations' Safety Calls will normally be sent on Ch70 or
2187.5kHz - the announcement to include a working channel for the
voice 'Securite' call and message. Individual safety calls to Coast Stations
may also be sent on the HF Distress and Safety alerting frequencies, if
    appropriate.

The voice 'Securite' call and message may be sent on Ch16,
2182kHz or an appropriate HF Voice Distress & Safety frequency
(assuming no Distress/Urgency traffic already in progress on the voice
channel) or it may be sent on some other working channel if deemed
appropriate.

Ships will normally send voice Safety/Securite messages on:
Ch 16/2182kHz if it is an 'All Stations' call.
A (Simplex) working channel other than Ch1612182kHz if Ch16/
2182kHz already occupied with Distress/Urgency traffic.
A channel nominated by the Coast Station/MRCC in their DSC
Acknowledgement, if the ship makes an individual DSC Safety Call
to that station.
Ch 13 VHF - for the exchange of safety messages with another,
individual ship, concerning the safe movement of the two vessels
concerned.
