METAREA (see NAVAREA)

MF IHF SSB Radio

A marine radio set which covers the MF {Medium Frequency} and HF
(High Frequency) bands (See Appendix IV)

MMSI
Maritime Mobile Service Identity - an individual numerical identity for
use with DSC equipment, and from which some Inmarsat IDs are derived
{see Appendix V}

MRCC
Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (See RCC)

MSI
Maritime Safety Information - the term used to cover weather and
navigation information, and SAR information, transmitted by the
NAVTEX and Inmarsat SafetyNET services.

MUF
Maximum Usable Frequency - the highest {HF} radio frequency that
will be refracted by the ionosphere for communication over a particular
distance {see also OTF IOWF}.

NAVAREA
The world is divided into 16 'NAVAREAS' for the promulgation of
navigation information. Those same areas are referred to as 'Metareas'
for weather information.

NAVTEX
A broadcast service for promulgating 'Maritime Safety Information' {e.g.,
weather and navigation warnings; and initial distress alerts}.

NBDP
Narrow Band Direct Printing - radio telex transmission, usually used
when referring to a broadcast service {e.g. NAVTEX} or two-way 'telex'
communications, between ships, over radio.

NCS
A ' Network Coordination Station' in the Inmarsat service {allocates a
communications channel between Ships and Coast/Land Earth Stations}.

On-Scene Co-ordinator (OSC)
Vessel/aircraft co-ordinating on-scene operations during a SAR operation.
