(John Hannent) #1
(LES) which you must specify.
Key-in the telephone/fax number you require - after you have been
connected to the LES on a working channel.
You do not have to 'select' the signalling channel, nor do you have
to carry out any operator function to change to a working channel. This
is handled by the NCS and your own equipment (provided that you do the
right things).

First Stage - connecting with your chosen Land Earth Station (LES):

Lift the handset {or select 'telephone' using the keyboard}.
Select routine priority (key 01 for telephone; key 02 for fax).

  • Key the LES ID required.
Initiate the call (typically, using the 41= key).

Second Stage -connecting with the telephone/fax subscriber you desire

(through your chosen LES):

  • Receive dial tone (can take up to 15 seconds after 'initiating the call').

  • Key-in the telephonelfax number required (starting with 00, followed
by the destination country code and telephone number required).

Press the 41= key. (For a fax call-instead of 'lift the handset' - you will

normally use the dialling function on the fax machine).

Question: The 'dialling string' that has been programmed into my
computer, used when calling-in to send/collect e-mail on my Inmarsat-
A, uses 02, the LES ID and # - followed by six 'commas' - then '67#'
What does all this mean?
Answer: '02' is correct for fax/voice-band data. Each comma causes
a short delay - the six commas being enough to allow the 'dial tone'
to come through. 67 is the code used to access your LES e-mail service,
where your messages are held, pending your call.

Inmarsat-A PC Telephone - Example
Telephone call to London, UK telephone number 020 7728
1000 through the Greek LES (using 'Nera Saturn' Inmarsat-A
equipment onboard the vessel)

  • Lift the handset and receive dial-tone from your equipment.

  • Key 01 13 #.

  • Receive dial tone from Thermopylae (the Greek LES - ID from
    ALRS Vol. 1/5).

  • Key 00442077281000#.
