Ian Waugh - A Mariner\'s Guide to Marine Communications

(John Hannent) #1

Note I - If you are in range of a VHF DSC Coast Station/MRCC (Sea
Area AI) you should receive the Coast Staton/MRCC DSC Distress
Acknowledgement on Ch70 (DSC Distress Acknowledgements are
'All Stations' calls) and/or their Chl6 voice acknowledgement.
Note 2 -If the vessel in distress is outside of Sea Area AI, a VHF Distress
Alert may not be received by a Coast Station/MRCC -and you may
have to inform a Coast Station about the situation. If you use DSC
(whether on VHF, MF or HF) to 'relay' this information ashore, you
should address your 'DSC Distress Relay' to a specific Coast Station/
MRCC - NOT to 'All Stations'
Wizard would have 'Acknowledged by voice' (with the master's
permission) after the Coast Station had acknowledged - that way the
Coast Station/MRCC starts to get an idea of what vessel(s) are in the
vicinity and who may be able to help. Wizard's voice acknowledgement
would take the form:

'Mayday JustinaJustinaJustina (or Falmouth Coastguard)
this is Wizard, Wizard, Wizard callsign Golf Whiskey India Zulu,
Received Mayday'
In the above example, Wizard's radio log would look like:

Note that:

  • The position in the DSC Alert may differ from the voice position,
depending on the time difference between the last DSC position
update and the time of the voice distress message.

  • The person recording subsequent voice proceedings in the radio log
    should 'sign-on' watch for Ch16.
