More than 50 years after he
completed his groundbreaking
solo circumnavigation on Lively
Lady, Sir Alec Rose has been
honoured with a blue plaque
installed at his former home
and business in Southsea.
The new sign was unveiled on
the site of his grocery store at
38 Osborne Road, which is now
a fried chicken takeaway. There
is already a blue plaque
commemorating Sir Alec’s
voyage adjacent to the Victory
Memorial in Southsea.
Alan Priddy from the charity
Around and Around
spearheaded the recent
restoration of Lively Lady. He
said recognition for the
‘forgotten’ circumnavigator,
who sailed to Australia and

back because he wanted to
visit his son, was long overdue.
“Sir Alec made me the person
I am today. He didn’t do his
voyage for gain but because he
wanted to. He has been
allowed to be forgotten. I was
proud to be able to see the
plaque unveiled and for Sir Alec
to receive the recognition he
deserves,” he said.
Around and Around, which is
the custodian of Lively Lady, is
hoping to take the 36ft ketch

around the world again,
repeating the success of their
2006-2008 circumnavigation
which saw disadvantaged
youngsters from Portsmouth
sailing in the wake of Sir Alec.

UK cruisers visiting Belgium
this season are being told that
the authorities will allow the
use of red diesel in engine fuel
tanks for propulsion, although
boaters must prove that 100%
duty has been paid.
The Cruising Association (CA)
is advising sailors to keep all
invoices on board in the unlikely
event any inspecting Customs
official should wish to see them
as proof of the duty payment.

The agreement was
successfully used last year
after many sailors stayed away
from the country when some
boaters were fined in 2017 for
having UK marine red diesel in
their tanks. Under EU laws, fuel
can only be marked if it is sold
at less than the full tax rate.
The Belgium authorities have
agreed that any changes to the
policy will be shared with the
CA in a timely fashion.

Former Royal Navy supply
officer and banker Mark Dowie
is to be the new chief executive
of the RNLI.
The lifeboat operations
manager at Salcombe RNLI
in Devon will take up the post
on 15 May 2019, replacing
Paul Boissier.
A keen sailor, Dowie, who was
recently chief executive of
corporate and institutional
banking at Standard Chartered
Bank, began volunteering with
the RNLI two years ago. He
added that he was ‘incredibly
proud’ to be appointed to lead
the charity.
