The iconic Fawley power
station chimney on the Solent,
is to be demolished and
replaced with a glass tower as
part of regeneration plans.
Fawley Waterside Ltd wants
to build a small town of 1,
homes, along with a hotel,
yacht club, shops, restaurants
and a marina on the site. It has
been told by New Forest

District Council that the
chimney has a ‘detrimental
impact’ on the New Forest
National Park landscape.
The developers are planning
to remove the chimney and
apply for permission to build a
100m high glass tower which
can be seen from the Solent’s
eastern and western
approaches.

CLEANER ILFRACOMBE
An autonomous marine robot,
known as WasteShark, has
been launched by the charity
WWF and Sky Ocean Rescue
at Ilfracombe harbour in North
Devon. The robot can collect
in excess of 15 tonnes of
waste a year and gathers data
about the marine environment.

Bristol City Council is
considering increasing harbour
fees as well as other measures
to try and make the city’s
harbour pay its way.
In 2017/18 the local authority
spent £1.6million running the
facility but received only
£1.19million from moorings
and other charges.

Speaking to PBO, a council
spokesperson said: “Over the
next few months we will
consult widely about steps we
need to take to not only run up-
to-date fit-for-purpose harbour
services, but also how the
costs can be fairly shared
between both harbour and
council service users.”

SCILLY ISLES PROTECTION
Boaters are being urged to have their
say on plans to extend the Isles of
Scilly Special Protection Area by
almost 13,000 hectares.
It is hoped the move will offer greater
protection to thousands of seabirds
including Manx shearwaters and
European shags. The consultation
ends on 21 May this year.

Royal Torbay Yacht Club
has been named the RYA
Club of the Year following
a public vote. Founded in
1863, the club has
modernised its historic
clubhouse over the last
two years. Volunteers
have also held open days,
hosted sailing events and
organised a range of
programmes such as the
recently launched
Squadron 13, a pay and
play initiative for 8-
year olds which has led to
an influx of new members.
