Uku Randmaa and Istvan
Kopar have taken third and
fourth place in the Golden
Globe Race.
Randmaa claimed the event’s
final podium position on 10
March, crossing the finish line
off Les Sables d’Olonne in
France after almost 252 days
alone at sea. The Estonian
sailor lost more than 20kg in
weight during the race having
nearly run out of food.
Reflecting on his nonstop
circumnavigation, Randmaa
said he was constantly worried
about equipment failure. He
was also shocked by the
amount of plastic rubbish in the
ocean after rounding the Cape
of Good Hope.
“At one time I came across a
door and on another occasion,
a complete tree. If I had hit that,
I think my steering would have
broken,” he noted.
American-Hungarian Istvan
Kopar achieved fourth place on
21 March, having
circumnavigated in 263 days.
He said his biggest reward in
the race was “solving all the
problems en-route”, which
included self-steering issues and
an overloaded gearbox within his
Tradewind 35’s pedestal wheel.
Finnish skipper Tapio
Lehtinen is the last entrant still
sailing. At the time PBO went to
press, the 61-year-old was in
the Atlantic and was expected
to finish by mid-May. Just four
out of 18 starters have made it
to the finish, including winner
Jean-Luc Van Den Heede.

Commenting on the win, the
association’s secretary
general, Gavin Allwright,
stressed the importance of
delivering change in the industry.
“The issue is not why, but
when and how we will install
wind solutions,” he said.

Globe Race win.
As PBO went to press,
preparations were under

became the first person to
sail single-handedly
non-stop around the world.
