CONTRIBUTORS

Kate Lardy

Fort Lauderdale-based writer Kate
has worked on and around yachts
for two decades, most recently as
editor of ShowBoats magazine. In
this issue, she reveals nine new
superyacht concepts from the
world’s top designers (page 35).
What concept in particular
caught your eye?
Most definitely Thor, by Gresham
and Seymour Diamond. I rarely
see something as avant garde as
Thor’s floating glass floor in the
double-height grand salon. Now if
someone would just build it...
If you were to design your own
concept superyacht, what
would its unique feature be?
Taking a cue from Feadship’s
Silence, it would have an ocean
clean-up system for removing
plastics, so we could leave a
healthier ocean in our wake
What boating activity are you
looking forward to in 2019?
The family trip to my bucket-list
destination, the Tuamotu
Archipelago, that I wish Boat
International would send me
on (pretty please)

Ben Harries

London-based fashion and
portrait photographer Ben
Harries’ work has appeared in
Esquire, GQ and The Times in the
UK, where he has photographed
everyone from Buzz Aldrin and
Marc Jacobs to Vivienne
Westwood. This month he
shot aluminum wizard Alex
Rasmussen (page 120).
What inspires your work?
Many things, but mostly daylight
What’s the key to shooting
a good portrait?
Be prepared, and always
expect the unexpected
Do you research your projects
beforehand? Always – I try to
find out as much as possible.
Google is a wonderful resource!
How do you make your subjects
feel comfortable?
Talk to them. It’s too easy to get
wrapped up in the technicality of
getting the shot, especially if your
time with them is limited. Always
make sure you build trust with
them; it’s very important

Chris Caswell

Chris is an award-winning
yachting journalist born in San
Francisco but now based in
Florida “to be closer to the large
yacht action.” The author of
several boating books and editor
of CharterSavvy, he explores CL
Yachts’ CLB72 on page 136.
How long have you known
about Cheoy Lee?
As a high-school kid I helped
unload a Cheoy Lee sailboat at a
local yard and was stunned to find
the shipping cradle was solid teak
Your favorite feature
on the CLB72?
Windows, windows, windows –
delivering a bright and airy interior
Biggest surprise?
This is a 76ft yacht, yet I found her
as nimble as a boat half her size,
thanks to Howard Apollonio’s hull
and the twin Volvo pod drives
What did you enjoy about
writing this feature?
A chance to see BY Lo, director of
Cheoy Lee North America and a
friend since not long after BY
graduated from Stanford

Tory Kingdon

Tory is a Boat International
contributing editor and has also
written for The Telegraph and
Harper’s Bazaar. This month, she
highlights what to check out at
Salone del Mobile in Milan and
explores the latest textile trends
in our Design Report (page 63).
What are you most looking
forward to at Salone?
Euroluce, for its lighting
installations. And Lasvit never
fails to disappoint with its
lighting and glassware
Describe your dream interior
I’m a big fan of the trend towards
mid-century-style yacht interiors,
but I’d need to throw some
beautiful contemporary fabrics
into the mix, such as Rubelli’s
new Baba Jaga jacquard
Your favorite design spot?
The Alain Ducasse restaurant at
the Plaza Athénée in Paris feels
out of this world, just like its food
And what’s your all-time
favorite piece of design?
Duralex drinking glasses
