A view on design

The trend for ever-larger yachts means more windows of opportunity
for designers to create and flourish, says Miranda Blazeby

he increasinguseofglass
has been identifiedasakey
trend by three leading
superyacht designers. Theoft-quoted
desire to connect insideandoutside
has led to a significantincreasein
the amount of glass in exteriordesign,
Italian designer Giorgio
Cassetta says. He points to
Benetti’s 353ft superyacht
FB272 (opposite page)
which features more than
8,500 square feet of glass.

presents great opportunities for
designers. Key to this is the growing
appetite for ever-larger yachts. “With
these new, increased sizes we are open to
do whatever we want,” Zuccon says. He
points to 244ft Elandess’s underwater
viewing room, which allows guests to

view the submerged world through glass
paneling installed below the waterline.
While Cassetta agrees “there will always
be a market for huge boats,” he sees a
“rationalizing” of the market. “There is a
shift from buying a boat to show off and
buying a boat to really enjoy it,” he says.
