Ulster Tatler – June 2019

(nextflipdebug2) #1

Tell us a little about DMK.
DMK focus on the revision of skin anomalies,
such as acne, and treat the skin at cellular level.
We are given a natural moisturiser at birth,
known as the acid mantle. In the 1960s, the de-
velopment of beauty creams led to a marketing
ploy that tried to convince women that their skin
needed added moisture, which wasn’t the case.
Rather than develop something that interrupts
the skin’s natural processes, I decided to repli-
cate the action of natural moisturiser in the skin.
Often you hear about a wonderful, exotic new
treatment that is meant to work wonders, but if
the body’s skin cells don’t recognise it as part of
their genetic blueprint, they will reject it. There-
fore, our treatments are dedicated to bringing
skin back to the way it is supposed to be using
raw, natural materials.
DMK is built around the philosophy of
‘Remove, Rebuild, Protect and Maintain’ – by
removing the cuticle build-up of dead skin
cells without causing trauma to the skin, we
provide the body’s skin cells with what it needs
to rebuild and heal. Our treatments and home
prescriptives work within the skin rather than
on its surface. Enzyme treatments, one of our
first and most popular treatments, deals with
the enzymes in the body directly rather than the
enzymes found in the products – our products
are merely tools which help to provide balance
and harmony to the skin.
DMK are also in the business of age manage-
ment – note that I didn’t say anti-ageing, as there
is no such thing. We are all ageing. Notice how
the skin on women’s breasts looks cleaner and
whiter compared to the skin on their face – such
skin actually shows a woman’s real age. The skin
on our face is greatly affected by exposure to
outside elements – the sun, our diet, what we put
on our skin. Unless you lived inside a cave your
whole life, your skin is susceptible to natural and
chemical forces. With ongoing treatment, we
can certainly manage the effects of ageing by
focusing on maximising the tissue so that it will
be at its healthiest.
Being the face of the company, I work hard
at looking as good as possible – it is important
to look the part. Looking at me, you wouldn’t
believe that I am in my late 70s, but it is all to do
with lifelong management of the skin. Age does
not matter to me, but looking good does.

What sets DMK apart from other skincare
brands on the market?
Though many competitors have tried to copy us
in the past, there is nothing quite like DMK. We
are the only ones to put forward the concept of
skin revision, a term I coined many years ago. It
is our concept of skin revision that is key to our
success, not one particular product or treatment.
DMK focuses on providing an immediate,
in-depth diagnosis of clients – many people
talk about ‘skin types’ which don’t exist – rather,

we should be looking at things in terms of ‘skin
conditions’. Skin type suggest that the issue is
singular, but stressful events (marriage, moving
house) can cause changes and irregularities to
the skin at any stage of a person’s life. At DMK,
we are focused on long-term revision and
maintenance, through treatments in the clinic
and also home prescriptives. While the base in
our cremes are the same, they are also tailored
to each condition.
What also sets us apart is our ability to treat
the skin without causing any major trauma to
it – treatments such as dermal fillers and micro
needling are effective in the short-term, but
can often result in long-term trauma to skin
cells. When dealing with the revision of major
skin trauma, we do not shy away from working
together with surgeons and alongside other
medical treatments to provide the best results
for a client. We care about changing skin, and
ultimately, changing lives.

Your treatments mainly focus on skin condi-
tions and age management – what kind of
treatment would you recommend for me as
a female in her early 20s who has few skin
problems, but is concerned about the future
of her skin?
In your case, the treatment would look at
preventative measures – I would recommend
The DMK Limited A 2 Z Revitalising Tinted Day
Crème, which is a good base, isn’t too heavy
and has SPF 30. Using this at the age of 22, I am
sure that you will eventually look pretty much
the same at 32, even 42! While you are not fully

experiencing the effects of global warming over
here in Ireland, the ozone layer is getting thinner
and it will be getting hotter, eventually exposing
you to lethal carcinogenic rays. It is important
to be in protection mode at all times, and you
need precursors and back support for every
contingency. It is never too early to start looking
after your skin.

Your work has been pioneering in marrying a
person’s biological makeup with appropriate
skin treatments – what would you say has
been the highlight of your career?
My book is something I am quite proud of and I
would recommend reading it – it is a page-turn-

er! It’s called The
Maybelline Prince and
it’s available on Amazon

  • profits from the sales
    go to The Harvey Milk
    Foundation, of which
    I am an ambassador.
    There is a chapter called
    ‘Irish Eyes Do Smile’ that
    would be of particular
    interest.

Why are you visiting Belfast this week?
Would you travel often for conferences and
talks?
I have visited Belfast and the south of Ireland
many times before, but I don’t travel as much as
I used to. Jenna and Mark Mulholland are the
brand representatives for Northern Ireland, and
they are very supportive in promoting DMK’s
philosophy and concept. Social media has be-
come such an influence for us as well, as clients
are putting up their before and after images
online to show how effective our treatments
have been. We are visiting Belfast to encourage
more clinics to train in using our treatments and
represent the DMK brand.

For those who would like to get involved in
supplying and promoting DMK’s treatments,
is a background in biochemistry necessary?
A background in biochemistry isn’t necessary,
and full training will be provided by Jenna. What
you do need is passion and support for the
brand, as well as a professional attitude. Once a
therapist completes training and is ready to de-
liver the treatment, it is important to be as honest
to the client as possible during consultation – do
not be afraid to use professional terminology
when describing the treatment process. You
have to establish your credibility. Another im-
portant thing to do is to remove the sales aspect
from the consultation – DMK therapists do not
sell, they prescribe people with something that
will change their lives.

What are your plans with DMK this year?
We will be in Vegas in mid-June at a World of
Confidence conference, where I will be introduc-
ing our new Probiotic range Enbioment: 3 new
products which will work with the microbiome
system in the body. It will be unlike anything you
have ever seen.

You are obviously very dedicated to your
research and the promotion of DMK – how do
you relax in your spare time?
When I get a chance, I play the piano – my
dream would be to hold a concert one day. I am
in the process of winding down and passing the
management of the company to my nephew,
who will eventually take over the whole opera-
tion of the business.
