FIGURE 1.2: WIND FORCES ON A SHIP

With the exception of wind which is dead ahead or astern or dead abeam, the resultant wind force
does not have the same angular direction as the wi-nd. For exam.pl e. a wind 450 off lhe bow yields
a resultant wind force of about 80° off rhe bow for a 250,000 DWT tanker. In Ihis case the point
of application of the force is forward of the tran verse cenrre line, producing a yawing moment on
Ihe ship.
