8 CALIFORNIA & BAJA: Tuna on kites

Weather continues to be a factor as 30 to
70kg bluefin continue to play peekaboo
offshore. Many private boaters are satisfying
themselves with the steady bite of white
sea bass, as well as yellowtail (kingfish to
Aussies).FurtherdowntheState,thelong-

5 SAMOA: Cooler water improves action

May delivered beautiful glassy
days, but hot water kept the bite
slow, with the pelagics holding
deeper in the cooler water.
Team Troppo concentrated
their efforts inshore, producing
great results with giant
trevally, Spanish mackerel and
dogtooth tuna. The GTs were a standout, with plenty of fish to 20kg
popped from the reefs just a short haul from Apia. When the wind
created a chop and cooled the surface, they headed out to 2000m
and caught yellowfin tuna to 40kg. The odd blue marlin and sailfish
were also being tagged.
In July and August the water will start to cool and the offshore
gamefish will come back on the bite, including blue and black marlin,
yellowfin tuna, dolphinfish and wahoo.
