BlueWater Boats & Sportsfishing – July 2019

(Nandana) #1

I

get veryexcited whenourunderstanding
of an important topic takes a quantum-
leap forward. One of those moments is
happening right now, in this issue. And
while it might not help you to catch more
fish,it cancertainlyhelpyoutoenjoya very
noticeable improvement inthe eating quality
of yourtuna.
Eatingsomeof whatwecatchis notonlyan
important social justification for our fishing,
but also a delightful reward for our efforts.
For many, a feed of fresh gamefish is the
primarymotivatorforgoingfishingin thefirst
place.Sowhyis it thatevenafterfishingfor
a lifetime,few anglersknowhowtoproperly

fish veterinarians,who is a consultanttothe

Withclearlyexplaineddetail,DrPaulHardy-
Smith delivers fascinating insights into the
workingsof a tuna,alongwiththephysiological
processes going on inside one from the
moment you hook it. This ground-breaking
articledescribesthefactors thatdramatically

While Paul’s feature focuses on tuna, the

Another feature in this issue that I’m
particularlyexcitedabout– onethatI’msure
will improve your fishing success – is Leigh
Tucker’s article about fishing kites.Although
we’ve run featuresaboutkite fishingbefore,
this deadlytechniquehas notyet caught on
in Australasia,despiteitsenormouspotential.
Thisis probably becausefew tacklestoresin
this part of the world know anything about
kite fishing equipment. However, Leigh’s

Landmark features

Don’t you love it when a new technique takes your fishing to a whole
new level? Such insights are what drives Tim Simpson to produce this
magazine, and he’s especially excited about two special features in
this edition, one of which your stomach will thank you for.

and how to use it. The benefits make it well
worth making a special order through your
local store, or buying the equipment from a
US online retailer like Melton Tackle.
Kite fishing offers huge advantages when
chasing wary fish – especially tuna and sailfish

  • and it also works a treat on species turned-
on by surface splashing, such as yellowtail
kingfish. Kites also deliver some of the most
spectacular sights you will ever see in game
fishing. During a trip to Canada, I can still
picture the moment a 400kg Atlantic bluefin
tuna launched itself into the air to broach on
a live mackerel dangling from a fishing kite.
Nothing will get your heart racing more than
    a sight like that!
Drifting may be a significant change for you,
but once you find where the fish are located

  • perhaps over bottom structure, or around
a baitball – shutting off the motors to drift
with the ultimate stealth presentation can
deliver huge dividends. While covering the
area silently with splashing livebaits dangled
beneath a kite, you are likely to see action
even when the other boats go fishless.
Kites are an everyday piece of equipment for
thousands of boats chasing sailfish off Florida,
and with Leigh’s guidance I’m sure you will
also find deadly applications for fishing kites
    in your area.
