Boat International – August 2019

(C. Jardin) #1
As well as being responsible for several Standard properties,Hausman
was also behind the acclaimed SubMercer in New York,LeDiplomate
in Washington DC and Los Angeles’ most talked-about celebrityhangout,
Chateau Marmont.
This time, he chose to bring a bit of California’s outdoorlifestyletothe
capital. In the ground floor restaurant Hausman wantedan“inside/
outside feeling, and to bring the garden inside the building. There’salso
a deck in the terrace outside each room on the eighthfloor, withan
outdoor tub that allows you to look at the view.”
Hausman is keen to point out that each Standardprojectisvery
different, so there is no cookie-cutter approach in the design.ForLondon,
all lighting and furniture was custom-designed and basedonvintage
pieces. The colour palette is bold and unapologetic, designedtooffsetthe
greyness of the exterior, and of the British skies: combinationsofred,
blue and purple in the rooms; pink, green and black in thebathrooms.

Above: the all-day
restaurant, Isla, is
headed up by the
hotel’s executive
chef Adam Rawson.
Left: the feature wall
behind the reception
desk was created
by ceramics artist
Lubna Chowdhary.
Right: every room
on the eighth floor
has a terrace with
an outdoor tub for
terrific views across
the capital

The top floor is dedicated to a restaurant
and bar, with a roof terrace above, and is
served by an external lift

London architectural practice Orms added three extra storeys
to the building’s existing eight, while Archer Humphryes
Architects carried out the internal structural changes
