Inside track

Verride Palácio Santa Catarina is a triumph of
old meets new, says Charlotte Hogarth-Jones

or yacht lovers, it’s hard to picture
a more idyllic hotel than the newly
renovated Verride Palácio Santa
Catarina. From that elegant, historic
townhouse in the heart of Lisbon, rooms look out
ontothepeaceful sight of yachts sailing back and
forthacross the Tagus River. The building dates
backto1755, and from 1910 it was the personal
homeofthe Count of Verride. New works on the
buildingbegan in 2010, headed up by architect
TeresaNunes da Ponte, who worked alongside
interiordesigner Andrea Previ, opening officially
earlierthisyear.
Thehotel is an ode to contemporary design,
withbespoke pieces balanced perfectly with
originalfeatures. Neutral tones unify individual
rooms, while punches of colour add interest – from
richyellow walls inspired by the Sir John Soane’s
Museumin London to sculptural glass orange
vasescreated for the hotel by Claudio Buarque of
GaleriaDiferença. Artworks by Coca Froes David
andPaulRobinson, meanwhile, reflect the blues
andgoldsof the sunlit waters outside. Bold
ceramiclights were sourced from local atelier
Caulino, while minimal tables and consoles made
inbronzeor brass and woollen rugs were supplied
bylocalartisans. Textures are well balanced – cool
marbleand limestone are offset by rich velvets and
linens. The end result is grand yet serene. In fact,
it’s easy to feel at home here. If only... verridesc.pt
