Map Jing Zhang

Owners of Marala and
Northern Sun
Lengths: 58.8m and 50.8m
Years: 1931 and 1976
Locations: Malta and Phuket

Congratulations on the purchase of Marala a few years
ago. What’s your plan for the yacht?
At the moment, we can’t think much beyond the refit,
but we are looking forward to Marala’s return to the
waters of the Med in two years’ time
How extensive will any refit/rebuild need to be?
Unsurprisingly, after 88 years, Marala is revealing
that she needs a fair amount of work. Nearly two
years of work in Malta on her steelwork and
systemswill be followed by 18 months
ofinterior refit
What will be the biggest changes
to the yacht?
We’re working hard to
preserve the 1930s feel of the

vessel, but virtually every space is being redone
Where will the next stage of the work take place?
Marala will arrive at the Pendennis yard in Cornwall [UK]
for her next chapter
Will Northern Sun be staying in Thailand?
Yes. I work in Asia, so it’s a great way to escape quickly
to the water
How much time are you spending on board at
the moment?
Not nearly enough – but we hope to be aboard four or
five times before year’s end
Where’s your favourite place to take Northern Sun?
Favourite destinations include Myanmar and Indonesia,
but we never tire of Northern Sun’s beautiful home
waters off the coast of Phuket, Thailand
