a ‘shadow wave’, mainly involving junior
pilots and generally smaller-scale events.
During the COMAOs, the fighters
fought their way into an integrated
air defense system (IADS), interacted
with a land component including Joint
Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) and
flew close air support (CAS). The exercise
scenario was that of an international
crisis with missions increasing in

complexity as the exercise evolved —
typical of most modern air exercises.
Massive offensive strikes behind enemy
lines and dynamic targeting were some
of the main themes that stretched
the daily mission commanders, a role
that rotated between the nations and
squadrons that attended.
Next year the NTM will take place at
Beja in Portugal.
