Produced to a high standard in hardback
format,West Riding Steam contains some
truly superb images of steam at work
across the region.
Included are around 40 previously
unpublished images by respected
photographer and architect Gerald Dixon,
plus many others from well-known
names, including Derek Penny, Richard
Greenwood, Bill Potter and Peter Fitton.
The images have been organised in the
form of a journey from the north-west
corner of theWest Riding, at Ais Gill, via
the QueensburyTriangle, the Standedge
route, the main centres ofWestYorkshire,

York, Doncaster andWakefield to Sheffield,
capturing the distinctive character of each
region through their trains, the landscapes
and architectural styles.
The result is not just a fine record of the
last decade of BR steam inYorkshire, but
a glimpse of a lost world – a bustling, but
begrimed world of coal-fired traditional
industries already beginning to feel the
effects of painful transition.

SouthernRailwaybyOliverBulleid.
The initial focus of the programme is
on the recently restored rebuilt‘Merchant
Navy’No 35018British India Line(BIL).
Early test runs and mainline action
(including the 2018 Great Britain Railtour)
are covered.Thereafter, all the surviving
locomotives are featured – including both
the rebuilt and unrebuilt light Pacific’s.
An amazing total of more than 30 of 140
of these superb iconic locomotives have
survived into preservation.
There is excellent archive colour and

black and white material to set the
scene, but most footage features these
locomotives’widespread working on the
main line and on preserved railways.
Special mainline highlights include BIL
and LNER B1Mayflowerdouble heading
in the snow at Birkett Common earlier
this year, and the spectacular final steam
working up from Folkestone Harbour in
2008 behind rebuilt‘West Country’
No 34027Taw Valley.
Archive material even includes‘Merchant
Navy’No 35017Belgian Marinehauling
the‘Royal Scot’shot during the 1948
Locomotive Exchanges.
The first class commentary is informative
and appropriate and there are interesting
interviews with both owners and restorers.

Halesworth–aSuffolk

In its heyday Halesworth was a vital
transport hub for Suffolk, having links with
London as well asYarmouth, Lowestoft,

Norwich and the
Suffolk coast via the
Southwold line.
Naturally, the book
opens with a chapter
on how the town grew
thanks firstly to the
River Blythe and the
Blythe Navigation,
then with the arrival
of the Halesworth, Beccles & Haddiscoe
Railway in 1854.
The book then moves through the Great
Eastern Railway era and the links with
the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire
Railway, before turning its attention to the
narrow gauge line to Southwold.
The latter’s history takes up a good
50% of the 32 pages, including archive
photographs and maps for illustrative
purposes.
The final few pages are dedicated to
the HSNGRS and its progress to date,
particularly around the site of Bird’s Folly
engine shed.This section includes photos
of the site clearance work underway.
As a potted history of Halesworth and
the SR the book works very well, and
should appeal to those with interests in
this part of East Anglia and its railways.
Overall, the production is good,
although some photos and maps appear
grainy or pixelated on the matt paper.
