East for Tanfield ‘legends’ gala

FORMERBackworth Collieries
0-6-0ST No. 12, better known in
preservation as Great Western
Railway No. 813, returned to the
Tanfield Railway to celebrate its
North East heritage at the line’s
Legends of Industry gala on
June 14-16.
The 1901-built‘Swindonised’
Hudswell, Clarke last visited
Tanfield in 2007, and again was
present courtesy of the GWR
813 Preservation Fund and the
Severn Valley Railway.
Its appearance at the
gala coincided with the 85th
anniversary of its arrival at the
Northumberland collieries from
the PortTalbot Railway system in
SouthWales.
No. 813 ran in the guise it
carried when it first arrived at
Backworth, complete with No. 12
on the cab sides and minus its
safety valve bonnet.
In later years at Backworth
No. 813 lost more of its GWR
fittings, including its chimney,
receiving a new boiler and
the number 11 in 1950. It was
withdrawn in 1967 and sold
immediately into preservation.
The second guest loco was
another‘icon’of the North East’s
industrial railways. Seaham
Harbour Dock Co. 0-4-0ST No. 18
was built by Stephen Lewin of
Poole, back in 1877, and today
is one of the star attractions at
Beamish Museum, just a stone’s
throw fromTanfield.
The diminutive loco is not
fitted with vacuum brakes, and

therefore spent much of its time
on the loose-coupled coal trains,
or shunting in the vicinity of
Marley Hill.
The two visitors shared duties
with the resident fleet, including
Robert Stephenson 0-6-0T
Twizell(2730/1891), ex-Keighley
Gas Department Hawthorn Leslie
0-4-0ST No. 2 (2859/1911) and
RSH 0-4-0STSir Cecil A Cochrane
(7409/1948).
The opportunity was also
taken to pair No. 813 up with
Tanfield’s own ex-Backworth loco

  • RSH‘Austerity’0-6-0ST No. 49
    (7098/1943).
    Between them the six
    locomotives worked passenger
    sets between Andrews House,
    Sunniside and EastTanfield, with
    the coal train predominantly
    working between Marley Hill and

Sunniside, with some trips over
the full line at intervals.
Unfortunately, the 1854-built
loco shed at Marley Hill – the
oldest operating shed in the
world – was closed to the public

owing to the state of its roof,
which is now in need of urgent
repairs.
A £35,000 appeal to pay for the
work has been set up online at

Station. The boiler was returned to the frames in late April,

Wansford-based fleet at NVR

HUNSLET‘Austerity’0-6-0ST No. 3193 is
spending part of the summer on hire at
the NeneValley Railway (NVR).
Norfolk Heritage Steam Railway
Ltd’s (NHSRL) 1944-built loco formally
entered service at Bressingham in early
May following the completion of its
overhaul.
It made its public debut at the
museum’s Heritage Steam gala on May
4-6, but has been quickly snapped up
by the NVR to replace on-hire‘64XX’
0-6-0PT No. 6430, which is returning
to its Llangollen Railway home to

work summer services.The visit will
enable NHSRL to undertake some final
completion work on the loco and
all-important running-in prior to it
taking up duties on NVR passenger
services.
Another industrial loco has also
joined theWansford-based fleet for a
long-term hire period – Aveling & Porter
2-2-0WTThe Blue Circle(9449/1926).
The loco will remain at the NVR until
owner Mick Smith finds a buyer for the
former Holborough Cement Company
machine.

FUNDRAISING PLAN AS NENEVALLEY GIVES
GREEN LIGHTTODEREK CROUCHOVERHAUL

NENEValleyRailway-based Hudswell,
Clarke 0-6-0STDerekCrouch
(1539/1924) could be restored to full
working order after the NVR board
green lit a proposal by the railway’s
Small Loco Group.
The group has already completed
a full cosmetic overhaul of the
ex-Wissington Light Railway loco,
and is currently in the process of
carrying out a similar task on former
Nassington ironstone Hunslet 0-6-0ST
Jacks Green.

Derek Crouchholds a special place
in the NVR’s history, having come
to the railway on loan from Derek
Crouch (Contractors) Ltd in 1972.
Two years later it worked the line’s
first preservation-era train in 1974,
but has not run since 1982.
The Small Loco Group will soon
begin fundraising for the restoration,
which it hopes to have completed in
time for its 100th birthday, and the
50th anniversary of hauling the first
train, in 2024.
