... joy, relief, admiration and sadness 02/

IT HAS BEEN AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER FOR THIS
edition. Some things have been good, but there have also been far
too many sad to cover in this one.
Let's start with the good news first. After so much speculation about
the future of Jaguar Land Rover, and rumours of a sale to other
European manufacturers, it was a relief to see that Jaguar's modern
saviour and hero, Ratan Tata, has came out publicly and stated that
the business was NOT for sale!
Nothing could have been more definitive than that for Jaguar and
Land Rover's future security.
A milestone event for us was the very fast drive at Lakeside circuit
in the very sophisticated XE SV8 Project 8 four door finely honed
weapon of a car. Few have had the chance of such a special
experience, and over the past weeks I have puzzled how SVO
engineers could create what is a road-going pure racing car, but
which comes with all the production car trim and refinements, and
with the same high build standard of fit of a regular luxury Jaguar. It
is a masterpiece, and the fact it was the first one of three hundred
cars built, added to the privilege we report on for all our readers.
Of course, the losses have been terrible. Norman Dewis, Jim
Percival, Jim Randle, Niki Lauda the former F1 Jaguar Racing head,
and undervalued Tommy Sopwith. Tommy made Jaguar the main
part of his Equipe Endeavour team, successfully raced a 'Mk1', then
employed the best drivers to race his Mk2s and E-Types.
On a personal front, I am sure the Jack Bryson story is the one I am
proudest of in this edition. His eldest son John got the ball rolling
when he wrote about his father and shared that with us. Its reading
was followed by a massive amount of research for what emerged as
the most remarkable story we have published in many years. It even
exceeds the Bob Jane tribute, and ranks alongside the Tony Gaze
biography which also is too incredible to make into a movie - nobody
would believe it could possibly be true! I was a huge admirer. Jack
Bryson's life started as an illegitimate foundling in Timaru, yet he
achieved astounding success. Who could have expected it.
