Towing Cermaq’s new 102-ft (31 m) hydrolicer barge Salar out
of Victoria harbour is the 110-ft (33.5 m), 2,250-hp Amix tug
arctic taglu (1976, Allied Shipbuilders). Assisting the tow in the
inner harbour is Victoria Tug & Barge’s 36-ft, 700-hp perSuader
(1972, Alberni Engineering & Shipyards). The Salar was
designed by Norway’s Hydrolicer Production, built by Neptune
Shipyards in Holland, and equipped with Cflow fish handling
systems and PG Flow Solutions non-mechanical pump sys-
tems. It uses a closed water column to delouse fish, creating
turbulence that causes the lice to lose their vacuum-based grip
on the fish and fall off without chemicals or trauma to the fish.
The barge is equipped with four transfer lines that allow well-
boats and service boats to transfer live fish at a rate of 30-
tonnes per hour per pump, and it has accommodations spaces
for the operators. It was destined for the Tofino region, where
it will be put into service over the summer.
