A big project for North Saanich-based Battersby
Woodenboats this past year has been the refit of
cascaDia, the third and largest vessel in the Maple
Leaf Adventures fleet (photo above). Owners Kevin
Smith and Maureen Gordon searched globally for
a vessel that could be certified to high standards as
a Canadian passenger vessel accommodating small
groups of people on eco-tourism expeditions to re-
mote areas in BC.
Built by Challenge Marine, NZ and delivered
in 2006, the 42 m LOA x 12 m (138' x 40') steel-
hulled catamaran cascaDia was designed specif-
ically for boutique-size trips in the fjords of New
Zealand, making it well suited for similar work in
BC. Following a delivery voyage across the Pacific
Ocean, Maple Leaf Adventures conducted a year-
long refit to bring cascaDia up to Transport Canada stan-
dards, upgrade the decor and systems, and outfit the
vessel for high-end adventure tourism.
Battersby Woodenboats was tasked with designing, ma-
chining and installing a complete new mahogany cap rail
on all three decks of the vessel, with most of the project
completed while it was berthed at Point Hope Shipyard
having other work done. Hands-on help with the proj-
ect was supplied by the Cascadia crew including Ian
McTavish, Terese Ayre, Casey Brant, Eric Lindholm, Bryan

Bowles and Dan Baker.
The rails measure 3-½" x 1-¾" on the upper hot tub
deck, 10"x 1-¾" on the bridge deck, and between 12 and
16" x 1-¾" on the main deck. Khaya (African) Mahogany
certified by the Forest Stewardship Council was sourced
and supplied, machined to thickness by West Wind
Hardwood. In all, 1,400 board feet was purchased.
A key part of the process was allotting material appro-
priately, with wide stock matched to the curved sections
forward, long pieces for side decks, and the occasional
