Port Townsend

Shipwrights Co-op

The Port Townsend
Shipwrights Co-operative was
formed in 1981, and 13 part-
ners still work there. According
to Tim Lee, the yard is full-ser-
vice, taking on about 30 percent
wood projects, and June was a
busy time for maintaining both
fishing boats and yachts. Aside
from the seiner westernflyer,
which is being restored over
several years (see page 36), the
co-op worked on some other in-
teresting wood vessels this year.
The 52-ft tuna boat carol M
(1926, C.E. Moberg) received
some new planks and caulk-
ing. Tim Hossman was one of
the shipwrights on that project
(photos left and inset).
The 48-ft former BC pa-
trol boat PoPlar III (ex P.M.L.
17, ex M.L. 17, ex otter, 1948,
Menchions) was in for wood-
work including decking re-
pairs, as well as wiring. PoPlar
III was constructed for the
BC Provincial Police and lat-
er served with the BC Forestry
Service (bottom photo).
Other wood projects at Port
Townsend Shipwrights Co-op
included the aDmiral, a 1970s
seiner, which got a new fore-
deck and fish hold, and the the 47-ft bridge deck cruiser riPtiDe (ex nereiD,
ex nokare, 1927, Schertzer Bros.), which was was alongside for interior
joinery work and wiring. –D.C.
