of sheer planking. Current work focuses on restoration of the stern and deckhouse, plus construction of a period-correct
fly bridge. Photos show the deckhouse being lifted off the hull; insertion of a laminated sipo wood keel reinforced with
silicon bronze screws; timbered horseshoe stern built up from purpleheart; shaping a sawn frame; new sawn frames aft;
and shipwrights Peter Rust and Brad Seamens setting up a mould station in the hull. About 60 percent of the existing
wood on the vessel will be replaced. Fir is being sourced locally, while white oak is coming from the southeastern U.S.
According to co-op partner Tim Lee, six shipwrights are on the job full-time, and there is nationwide public interest in
the project. The westernflyer will be restored as a functional marine research vessel, with a high-tech laboratory located
in the former fish hold. Diesel-electric hybrid propulsion is planned, to minimize exhaust emissions. Steinbeck’s two
books about his time on the seiner are The Sea of Cortez and The Log of the Sea of Cortez. –D.C.
