Wonderful Wood

T

his month’s cover shot – the 1937 Teal-class sailboat Zest on sea trials
following its complete rebuild at Abernethy & Gaudin – is a bit of a de-
viation from Western Mariner’s usual fare of workboats and fishboats.
But it also follows perfectly in our tradition of highlighting BC’s wood
boat builders and shipyards in our August issue.
While there’s an impressive number of wood-hulled fishboats and workboats
still earning their keep on our waters, the hard truth is that there are fewer and
fewer of them each year, with increasing numbers of them converted to plea-
sure yachts or finding niche markets as special-interest boutique cruise vessels.
Maybe there will come a day when wood-hulled vessels will be exclusively
playthings for the rich, but in the meantime they carry on a rich working tra-
dition in BC, and keeping them in good order will always require top-notch
local specialized shipwrights and shipyards. Western Mariner is proud to pro-
file some of the projects coming out of our local wood-specialized shipyards,
and we hope you like reading about them. Coverage starts on page 29 in our
“Working in Wood” feature, with additional feature coverage on page 42 (“Wood
wrapped in steel”) and a historical wood vessel feature on page 45 (“Captain
John Voss and the tilikum”). Enjoy, and have a great summer!

A

small cove in False Creek inspired the name of David Bradford’s
Alder Bay Boat Company. A fixture on Granville Island for 28 years,
David closed the shop at the end of December. “It was time,” he said.
During his tenure he built and repaired hundreds of small wood
boats and the paddles and oars that propelled them. Turn to any of
our past August wooden boat issues to see his work.
David volunteered his time and talents freely, serving as the inspiration and
guiding hand for the Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival’s Family Boatbuilding pro-
gram and the creation of the SS master Society, among others. His always open
door allowed visitors from around the world to wander through his workshop, and
surely inspired many to try their hand at the craft. The wooden boat community
at large and those closer by who came to rely on him for assistance and guidance
owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Thank you David, and happy retirement.
