Jespersen Boat Builders

The winter of 2018/2019 saw work continue at Jespersen Boat Builders on the stem-to-stern rebuild of the Danish
double-ended spidsgatter skoal (ex snoP I, ex tovarich). The vessel, which was designed by Aage Utzon and built in 1939
by Copenhagen’s Kai Schwartz, was put into storage immediately following its completion due to the outbreak of WWII. It
was finally launched in the spring of 1946, and was sold and shipped to Vancouver in 1953.
Built of European larch planking on white oak frames, with an iroko cabin house and teak interior, skoal has both raced
and cruised locally, and sparked a love affair for its current owners when they had their first date aboard some 41 years
ago. Two years ago they rediscovered the vessel for sale, purchased it, and took it to Jespersen for refurbishing.
When Western Mariner checked in last summer, Jespersen had just finished stripping down and evaluating the boat.
The planking was still generally good (European larch is renowned for its durability) as was the house; but the decks,
floors, garboard strake and most of the ribs were slated for replacement. The original grown floors were suffering from
iron sickness, so the keel was removed and these were tackled first, replaced over the summer of 2018 with laminated
