and glued sapele floors. The past 12 months have seen Jespersen
reframe the hull with white oak ribs, replace the stern post with
sapele mahogany (photo left), replace the forekeel and stem
with purpleheart and mahogany respectively, replace most of
the deck beams with white oak, and replace one of the sheer
planks with yellow cedar. Jespersen also removed the caulking
and splined the vessel instead, using red cedar epoxied in place.
Butt joints in the underwater hull planking were replaced with
short lengths of cedar scarfed in place (photo above). At press
time the keel was waiting to be reinstalled as soon as the new keel bolts arrive.
The original plan was to keep the existing house intact after raising it off the boat, but midway through the project it was
decided to disassemble the house and reconfigure its profile closer to the design drawings, thus extending the cockpit.
The original deck was built of canvassed tongue-in-groove planking, and this will be replaced with plywood covered in
epoxy-set Dynel, giving the appearance of a canvas deck but with better waterproofing and durability. –S.H.
