Sharp Marine Restoration & Joinery

David Sharp set up shop at Shelter Island, in Richmond,
three years ago. He attended the International Boatbuilding
Training College in Lowestoft, UK and worked in various yards.
He annually services the 80-ft miDnightsun (1938, North Van
Ship Repair), a seiner converted into a charter boat. This year
Sharp replaced the forward portside bulwarks using red cedar,
and did some patching on the stern bulwarks.
Another project was converting the 38-ft yellow cedar troller
lighttomoDerate (ex thormanByisle) into a yacht. The work list
included removing the fish holds and constructing a trunk cabin,
converting the forecastle into a head, rebuilding the deckhouse
interior, and installing new mechanical and electrical systems.
When Western Mariner visited in mid-June, two vessels were
up beside the shop for restoration. The 45-ft troller and some-
time forestry service vessel C-Buster (ex carrie K, ex reliant I,
1972, Prince Rupert Shipyard) required extensive renewal. The owner had some milled yellow cedar, so there was ample
material to replank and replace the stem, midships frames, beam shelves and stern. The original bulwarks were replaced
with aluminum. Finally, the Sharp crew refastened the planks and caulked (photo opposite).
The other long-term project is the 46-ft sloop eulalie (1946, Kettenburg Boat Works). This was designer George
Kettenburg’s personal vessel, a frequent California race winner during the late 1940s, besting Humphrey Bogart’s yacht
among others. Constructed of mahogany on bent oak frames (which had fractured), she is being reframed with laminat-
ed white oak, and replanked below the water line with sapele (photo above). The floor frames are being replaced with
purpleheart, and the planks refastened. In June, Sharp was preparing to lay a teak deck and construct a 57-ft box-section
mast from Sitka spruce. –D.C.
