compounded by the fact that the wave also took the ves-
sel’s only compass.
A book published 50 years after Voss’s death originat-
ed conjecture, now repeated many times, that he was a
violent drunkard who murdered his mate and threw him
overboard. While Luxton’s accounts acknowledge Voss’s
sometimes moody and ill-tempered nature, there are

no facts to support suggestions of foul play. Recent re-
search has revealed Voss to be a complex character, high-
ly suited to the demands of a voyage in a small craft, and
Begent’s tragic loss should not diminish Voss’s stature as
a mariner.
Voss loved the boat and living close to the sea, and his
enjoyment grew as the voyage progressed. In each port he
