Letters

Adrift
One letter makes all the difference
in a Lat/Long position. Reader, Hugh
MacCallum, spotted on page 64 of
the July issue article “A Final Chapter
for the tug J.S. Polhemus” the position
“S 49 39.945, W123 10.317 indicates
J.S. Polhemus drifted from Howe
Sound to a point in the South Pacific
Ocean, a long way east of the south
end of New Zealand.”
We are assured the tug is still rest-
ing in Howe Sound and will be mind-
ful of N/S errors. Thank you, Hugh.

Complete engine-transmission
package
The photo story on the launch of
the salishseaecliPse in our June 2019
issue mistakenly reported the trans-
missions were supplied from ZF in
Mukilteo WA. In fact, Cullen Diesel
Power Ltd supplied the four Volvo
D13-700 engines and ZF 325-1 trans-
missions as a complete package for
the salishseaecliPse. Cullen Diesel
Power Ltd is the authorized dealer for
sales and service of ZF Marine trans-
missions and ZF Thrusters. – D.R.

Barque photographer
This photo of the four-masted
barque, BAP unión was incorrectly
credited when it ran in our July is-
sue. The picture was taken by Robert
Etchell, a regular contributor to this
magazine.

the background, September 1959.
Straits Towing
The late Captain “Curly” Bell sent this photo to me a long time ago and
he probably took the pic. On the far left the magellanstraits, then the
georgiastraits ex Belle. Aft the magellan looks to be the Johnstonestraits
then the salvage Queen and the YMS. The cherry picker and recoverer stand
out. The National Harbours Board replaced the old floating wharf with a
steel apparition.
BCing you,
Capt Nick Roman
