Chatting at the conference, John Vandenberg, Assistant
Deputy Minister Programs and Services Infrastructure
with the Northwest Territories noted that MTS (Marine
Transportation Services) is buying four 3,500-ton oil/gen-
eral cargo barges designed by Robert Allan Ltd. They are
expected to be delivered by a semi-submersible ship to
Tuktoyaktuk in August 2020.

For 2019, MTS had tugs and barges moving on the
Mackenzie in June and into the Beaufort in July. MTS also
plans to sail the tug Patlyall (1969, Allied Shipbuilders)
back to the Western Arctic. The former NTCL tug had been
laid up in Churchill but was part of the assets acquired by
MTS following NTCL’s bankruptcy.
Bilyana Ivanova of Robert Allan Ltd. talked about the
company’s long history developing ice class vessels, many
still in service.
