Seaspan Vancouver Drydock
During the first half of 2019, Seaspan’s Vancouver
Drydock completed a number of projects for government
and commercial customers. In mid-March the yard con-
cluded a refit on the 83 m light icebreaker and buoy tender,
CCGSsirwilfreDlaurier (1986, Canadian Shipbuilding).
This vessel is a vital part of Canada’s icebreaking fleet due
to its capability for both commercial and security work.
This spring, major side shell repairs were carried out on
the starboard side of the 958 ft bulk carrier Panacacia fol-
lowing a collision in Burrard Inlet. Scaffolding had to be
erected inside one of the holds so welders could reach the
damaged plating. At the same time, BC Ferries’ 139 m (457
ft) Queenofsurrey (1980, Burrard Yarrows) was in the yard
receiving extensive rudder and steel work.
Also in for repair was the 93 m (325 ft) ro-ro ferry seasPan
greg (ex gregyorke, 1964, Allied Shipbuilders). The 75
m (244 ft) chemical barge conumariver (1967, Burrard
Drydock) was converted into seasPan 543, while repairs
were conducted on the 241 ft U.S. tank barge nathan
schmiDt(2009, U.S. Barge), the 76 m (250 ft) petroleum
barge ITB vancouver (1999, Jinling Shipyard), the 67 m
DP barge ITB 45, and Sause Brothers tank barge sunset
Bay(2004, Gunderson Marine). In addition the yard crews
completed repairs on the 296 ft x 124 ft U.S. deck barge
Diouskouroi (1982, Zidell), one of the widest barges in the
North Pacific (photo above). –SVDD/D.C.
