Practical Boat Owner – August 2019

(ff) #1
Peterhead RNLI’s lifeboat is
temporarily out of service, after
the charity had to stand down
a number of volunteers at the
station due to ‘personal
rivalries and historic
disagreements’.
The RNLI said despite
sending in a trained mediator it
was unable to resolve the

issues, and concluded the
station could not run safely.
Volunteers from Fraserburgh
and Aberdeen will now provide
24/7 cover for this stretch of the
Scottish coastline.
The RNLI said it would be
working with the remaining
crew to get the service back
into operation.

A new pontoon has opened at the head of Loch Long at the
village of Arrochar in Argyll and Bute. The Loch Long Jetty
Association received grant funding for the project, which aims to
attract visiting cruisers. A 46m pontoon has been attached to an
existing slipway and a 12.6m hammerhead installed. Two visitor
moorings, taking vessels up to 15 tonnes, will also be in place
shortly. For details email: [email protected]

Work has started on the new
£4.2 million clubhouse and
facilities for Sussex Yacht Club,
which aims to become one of
the UK’s best disabled sailing
venues. The club at Shoreham
has worked with Sussex

More than 27,
people visited the
20th Crick Boat
Show by the
Grand Union
Canal Leicester
Line in
Northamptonshire
on 24-27 May, including a one-day record of 10,000.
Organised by Waterways World, the Canal & River Trust and
Crick Marina, the show saw over 250 exhibitors, with
boatbuilders reporting many orders secured.

Peterborough sailor Bob Cave,
known as Capt. Bob, is again
providing cruises along the
River Nene for disabled and
disadvantaged children after
local engineers repaired his
boat’s engine free of charge.
Capt. Bob has run trips for
years on his twin-skinned, steel
launch, Cleopatra. When the
boat’s 50-year-old 4108
Perkins engine failed he
contacted Perkins’ dealer,

DiPerk, whose engineers
diagnosed a dead fuel injection
system. Unable to afford the
repair, DiPerk, with funding
from Perkins Engines, stepped
in, completely overhauling the
engine before reinstalling it.
“Last year I made a £1,
loss, but it’s a joy to see the
children get so much pleasure
from the boat rides. I can’t
thank DiPerk and Perkins
enough,” said Capt Bob.

Sailors with Sailability Scotland
SCIO will now benefi t from an
extra level of safety following
Icom’s donation of two of its
M25-Euro handheld VHFs.
The radios will be used
during the charity’s sailing
activities including the annual
Challenger Traveller series,
and the Round Shuna Race.
