T

housands of sailors
on more than 1,
yachts took part in the
2019 Round the Island
Race in the Solent at
the end of June. It was
a mainly light-wind affair (nearly
1,000 retirements!), which usually
means a small, slow boat takes
the win on handicap. And so it
proved this year with the smallest
boat in the fl eet, Alacrity 18 Eeyore,
taking the Gold Roman Bowl. We
will be hearing from two different
contributors next month on board
two different boats and we shall
perhaps fi nd out a bit more about
why people like sailing in circles...
In this issue we have a nice
mix of circumnavigators: in the
news pages we report on a UK
sail-around for charity aboard a

Moody 28 and Ken Fowler, the
intrepid dinghy single-hander who
is attempting to circumnavigate
every single island in England and
Wales (183 in total apparently!).
Plus Andrew Simpson’s column
recalls the 1970 Round Britain and
Ireland race.
Turn a few more pages
and PBO reader Arthur Davies
describes circumnavigating
Wales – and it wasn’t more than
a few issues ago that we featured
a circumnavigation of southern
England (Thames to Kennet-and-
Avon canal).
Oh, and then there’s Randall
Reeves who is attempting to
sail around North America and
Antarctica in the same season. Turn
to page 13 to untangle that one!
Rob Melotti

What goes around...

St Michael’s Mount: Ken Fowler is sailing around all 183 islands of England and Wales
