ill Cullen, by his own
admission, relishes a
challenge and, having
previously restored a 1934
PA and a 1932 F1 Magna, he was
under no illusion what he could be
letting himself in for. This time it was
different, as he explains: “My grandson
was always interested in helping me
with my projects and I was looking for
a car to restore. I saw the remains of

B

this 1934 PA, which was in a thousand
pieces, being advertised by a dealer.
The owner had passed away and his
wife had asked him to sell it. And I love
a challenge,” says Bill with enthusiasm.
“I said to my grandson: ‘what about
you helping me restore this car?’ And
he said: ‘yes, that would be lovely’. We
went and bought it. My wife Joanne
was astounded when she saw it and
thought I’d gone completely insane!”

Bill had just managed to secure
the ideal workshop. Having the right
environment is crucial, as any restorer
will tell you, including tea and coffee
making facilities. “It had plenty of
space and I had the knowledge as I’d
previously done a 1934 PA, which I
loved and owned for 13 years. I sold
it but I don’t know why now. My wife
was sad as she also loved that car,
which we’d driven to Luxembourg

Realising that he regretted parting with a PA he had restored, Bill Cullen

decided he wanted a new challenge. It gave him the chance to share

many of the skills he’d learnt with his grandson, Lyall.
