He enjoys the process more than the prod-
uct, he tells me. “I take longer and make
fewer,” he says. Shaun pulls out a crate
of Japanese pull saws and hand planes
that speak to the fact that this is truly a
craft he has embraced. Once he bought a
machine to do a particular job and then
in the time it took the machine to be de-
livered he worked out how to perform the
task better by hand, and got it completed.
