The Complete Fly Fisherman – August-September 2019

tungsten beads took most of the fish, but
we also managed to take a handful on
small dries and hoppers. A short, sharp
retrieve had the aggressive fish eating our
flies with gusto, and this combined with
a sinking or intermediate line was the
recipe for success.

The section of the Crocodile River that
runs through the farm offers varied water
from slow pools to fast riffles, as well as
some man-made weirs. During our stay,
being winter, the river was low so we
opted to fish the very productive dams
instead. No doubt in summertime with
good flow the river has the potential to
produce really exciting fishing. With so
much great fishing available to us in the
dams we hardly gave the river a second
thought.

ACCOMMODATION
We stayed at Driehoek Cottage for the
duration of our visit. This five-bedroom
house has all the amenities one needs for
a weekend away. It features two indoor
fireplaces, an outdoor fireplace, towel
heaters and very comfy beds, to name but
a few of the features that make you feel
totally looked after when visiting a venue.
Set in a secluded spot on the farm where
quiet surrounds you like a blanket,
Driehoek and one of the other cottages
called Hillside have recently seen some
major renovations, leaving them with
modern amenities on the inside while still
capturing the essence of the countryside
in their old farmhouse exteriors.
