The Complete Fly Fisherman – August-September 2019

(Steven Felgate) #1

anything wrong with this already cosy
country cottage. It has a quaint old-
school feel and a wonderful lounge to put
your feet up and relax next to a roaring
fire. It sports views of the meandering
river below, and there is nothing quite
like the sound of a river to lull a fly fisher-
man to sleep at night. All cottages have
tackle rooms with fishing lockers, under-
cover parking, and are set far apart to
ensure complete privacy. Share holders
pay monthly operational levies.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS
It is clear that great care gets put into
the farm by its 30 shareholders, which is
something that makes Driehoek formida-
ble opposition for other developments
with similar attributes and ownership
structure. The dirt road is in exceptional
condition, the jetties are well maintained,
the fishing spots are easily accessible and
overall things just look very neat on the
entire farm. A further indication that all
is running smoothly is that one of the

female staff members has been there for
45 years and the previous farm manager
for 12 years. Bruce, the current manager,
has been there for six years and is not
planning on going anywhere. Happy staff
equates to a warm and welcoming atmos-
phere. The farm supports plenty of
wildlife, which includes a herd of 98 black
wildebeest and tons of grey rheebuck
that can be heard whistling throughout
the day.

Our take on the venue is that the
fishing is sublime and, with both river
and dams on offer, there is not much
more a fly angler can ask for. As a young
fly fisherman growing up in the area, I’d
always heard whispers of Driehoek, stories
of big fish and catching more than you
can handle. Well, as our experience clearly
illustrates, the rumours were true.

Note:Driehoek Farm operates on a
shareholder basis for each of the three
accommodation options on the farm. If
you wish to become a shareholder, or
are interested in more information, see
contact details overleaf.
