The Complete Fly Fisherman – August-September 2019

(Steven Felgate) #1
The tackle we used was a standard
5-wt Di3 and a WF5F line. Flies were also
the standard dragons, damsels and bug-
gers. Everything from a very fast to a very
slow retrieve caught fish. The returning
of the net resulted in many past fishing
escapades and adventures being retold.
A few gin and tonics in the afternoon re-
sulted in the four of us sharing a bottle of
red wine over dinner at The Triple Twigs
restaurant that evening with further rem-
iniscing and fun had by all. This left us
with an unquenchable thirst and a dull
headache in the morning but did nothing
to quell the desire to catch a few more fish
before we had to pack up and head home.

It fascinates me how fly fishing is
directly responsible for my meeting so
many solid mates over the years. I am
still not sure if the sport simply attracts
good people or if good people are at-
tracted to the sport. Either way you look
at it, you can be assured of meeting ex-
ceptional people on the side of a dam
while fly fishing.

One of the highlights while staying at
Kloppenheim is the natural spring water
that gets pumped from the top of the
mountain spring into holding tanks and
delivered to the hotel via their taps. It
is simply delicious! They really should
bottle the stuff and sell it. A few fish
under the belt and Sunday afternoon
fast approaching, it was time to say our
goodbyes to the team that we had got to
know so well and make the short drive
back home. I am already missing the
spectacular views, awesome food and
friendly staff of our new home on top of
the world.
