The Complete Fly Fisherman – August-September 2019

IMPROVED CRAFTY ROACH:
BLACK OR OLIVE
We have just returned from Middel-
punt where my son and I caught a bunch
of great fish on this new and improved
Crafty Roach. This pattern was born out
of necessity as I had forgotten to bring
along my olive rabbit to tie up some Papa
Roaches, so I improvised and used olive
Craft Fur. On its first outing it took over
14 rainbows. The new version is not
that different from the original with the
exception of the folded raffia wing case
and banded body on the olive version
using Copic marking pens.

The Crafty Roach is a really quick fly
to tie, Craft Fur has great movement, is
inexpensive and takes marking pens
really well. We tie it in olive and black
and both work exceptionally well.

SENYO TADDY
Senyo dubbing has become a staple
part of our factory flies. We use it in a
number of our largemouth yellowfish
flies and a range of specialised trout
patterns. The material is not dubbed in
the conventional, direct-dubbing method.
It is applied with the Jonny King style
method, which allows you to offer dorsal
and ventral colouring and you can add
hot-spots, gills, etc. The Senyo Taddy
is more of a transitional frog imitation
