The Complete Fly Fisherman – August-September 2019

PRODUCT REVIEW TCFF staff report

Whether it be fishing deep water or
shallow riffles, all that is needed is a
change in the angle of the rod to control
your depth. The REEL Fly Fishing
Nymphing rod did this with ease and one
can feel every bump through the delicate
rod tip. The rod did not collapse while we
threw a two-fly rig with tungsten-beaded
flies and we could manipulate the rod to
get the flies where we needed them to
be. The bonus of the 10ft length was the
ability to fish longer distances while still
being able to control the flies and not
spooking fish. The fact that the rod is
a good-looking four-piece only comple-
mented the overall experience that the
rod offered. At R1649 it is an excellent
option to explore Euro nymphing tech-
niques.

EURO NYMPH LINE
Euro nymphing lines are highly spe-
cialised and normally consist of a level
line with no taper, and much thinner than
a normal fly line (diameter of 0.55mm) so
as to increase the sensitivity for detecting
a take. With the line being so thin, there
is also much less drag on the line through
the water.

REEL Fly Fishing’s Euro Nymph line
has two small loops on either side for ease
of leader and backing connection. At a
total length of 100ft, the line came off
the spool as straight as an arrow and did
everything a Euro nymphing line should.
Casting short distances was done with
ease as one generally tuck-casts to get the
flies in the desired zone. We even man-
aged to tempt some spooky carp with the
Euro nymph technique. It has a 0-wt to
5-wt line designation, and is a light lime
colour in the front with a light peach
towards the back of the line.

IN SUMMARY
This setup is not confined to only fish
with nymphs, but dry fly and dry dropper
can be fished quite easily at short dis-
tances with delicacy. All and all, this is
a highly affordable setup if you would
like to pursue the advantages of Euro
nymphing.

NYMPHING ROD

E

uro nymphing, although not every-
body’s cup of tea, has taken the
fly fishing world by storm. As the
name suggests, it was developed by the
Europeans and specialised by the French
and Spanish and is used in the majority
of the competitive scene. This style of
fishing has seen a new approach to rods
and lines as it requires specific equip-
ment to deal with the manner in which
one is to Euro nymph successfully. With
major emphasis being placed on the rod
and fly line, this is not used for casting
long distances but rather short, accurate
casts and being 100% in control of the
line and flies.

Local company REEL Fly Fishing’s
owner Shaun Carstens realised the
potential this method has to offer local
anglers and subsequently developed his
own specialised equipment for this disci-
pline of fishing. Euro-nymphers favour
a 10ft, 3/4-wt rod with a soft tip so that
one can detect even the lightest of takes,
simultaneously providing the angler with
the extra length to control the flies with
the utmost precision.
